Indonesian films ‘Interchange’ and ‘Headshot’ selected for Toronto International Film Festival 2016

Film buffs know that the annual Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) is one of the most prestigious film events in the world and that the movies selected to show there are among the most promising in the world. For this year’s edition of TIFF, two Indonesian films have made the official selection.

One of them is the Mo Brothers’ (Timo Tjahjanto, Kimo Stamboel) ‘Headshot’, which stars ‘The Raid’ ass-kicking action star Iko Uwais. Judging by the synopsis below, we think this film could be Indonesia’s answer to the Bourne trilogy, though it will likely have more fist fights since Iko is involved:

The indomitable Iko Uwais (The Raid) stars in this fast and furious actioner as an amnesiac whose mysterious past as a killing machine comes to the fore when he takes on the henchmen of a vengeful drug lord.

This is Iko Uwais’ second starring role in a film that was selected for TIFF, the first being for ‘The Raid’, which premiered at TIFF 2011 and won overwhelming critical praise.

The other feature film is an Indonesian-Malaysian collaboration titled ‘Interchange’, directed by Malaysia’s Dain Iskandar Said. ‘Interchange’ stars Indonesian actors Nicholas Saputra, best known as the leading man in ‘Ada Apa Dengan Cinta’, and Prisia Nasution, who shot to fame in Indonesia for her role in the critically lauded ‘Sokola Rimba’. Check out the film’s teaser and synopsis below:

A shell-shocked forensics photographer is drawn into a supernatural murder mystery that reveals Kuala Lumpur’s underworld of ancient magic and sinister ritual.

Here’s hoping that the two films will be well received at TIFF and that they’ll eventually be shown in Indonesian cinemas.

More than 200 films have been announced for screening so far at TIFF this year. The festival will run from September 8-18.
