We use the term “tanah air” to refer to Indonesia because, as an archipelago nation, its land and waters are inseparable. That’s what makes the health of our seas especially important. But even though Jakarta is right by the water, it feels like the environmental dangers facing our oceans and marine resources are so far away that it’s easy to forget about them
Getting Jakartans to think about the issues facing our oceans is the main idea behind Festival Laut (Ocean Festival), which is being put on by Greenpeace Indonesia this Saturday.

The environmental group’s goal is to raise awareness about topics such as need for sustainable fishing practices and the cruelty of shark finning (Indonesia is the biggest exporter of shark fins in the world).
But while the issues being highlighted are serious, the festival also promises plenty of fun times and good music for all who come.
Festival Laut has a truly excellent lineup of indie musicians ready to take to the stage at Taman Krida Loka in Senayan, including Brianna Simorangkir, White Shoes and the Couples Company, Abdul and the Coffee Theory, and Stars and Rabbit.
There will also be lots of other fun activities for visitors to check out, like a bazaar (for goods including dive gear), workshops, and a cooking demo by Chef Andrian Ishak (from Jakarta’s coolest molecular gastronomy restaurant, Namaaz Dining) highlighting the use of sustainable fish.
In conjunction with Festival Laut, Greenpeace Indonesia is also holding a photo and video competition, with the winners earning a trip to Larantuka, Flores, to see sustainable fisheries in action. For more info, check out FestivalLaut.org
If you care about our oceans and want to have a great time out in the sun this Saturday, Festival Laut is a feel-good event for-good that you should definitely check out.
