The angklung is a traditional bamboo instrument found throughout Southeast Asia, but it originated in West Java, where it has been a part of Sundanese culture for centuries.
One group that is reinventing angklung music for the 21st century is Keluarga Paduan Angklung Sekolah Menengah Atas Negeri 3 Bandung (KPA 3 for short), a high school musical group from SMA 3 Bandung. Their main focus is making modern music with the traditional instrument and they have performed all over the world with their angklung interpretations of orchestral music.

Their next performance will be this Saturday at a concert titled “Tabula Rasa,” taking place at Aula Simfonia Jakarta. They will be playing angklung versions of a number of important classical pieces including “Clair de Lune” by Debussy and Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 5 (1st movement).”
The combination of angklung and orchestral music is surprisingly powerful, as proven by these videos of KPA 3’s past performances. Definitely one for classical and traditional music lovers to check out!
