After Go-Food, Go-Glam, Go-Life and everything else prefixed “Go-”, now comes Go-Play.

Indonesian startup decacorn Gojek launched its own video-on-demand platform yesterday, which the company said had been in development for about a year. They previously rolled out a beta version that was available to select Gojek users in June.

“Go-Play is launched as a solution so that quality Indonesian films become more accessible,” Go-Jek co-founder Kevin Aluwi said at the launch event yesterday, as quoted by Kompas.

“We want to be the platform where Indonesian filmmakers and content creators can showcase their works to a wider audience,” Go-Play’s CEO Edy Sulistyo added.

Gojek is aiming for Go-Play to be a proudly Indonesian version of Netflix, as it only contains local movies and series. At the event, several Go-Play Originals were announced, consisting of local series exclusive to the platform such as Filosofi Kopi the Series, a variety show called Kata Bocah Show, and a stand up comedy show titled Haha Club.

Go-Play will also feature Indonesian films that were co-produced by Go-Jek’s production house unit Go-Studio and previously shown in cinemas, such as the family film Kulari Ke Pantai, rom-com flick Aruna dan Lidahnya, martial arts western Buffalo Boys and arthouse drama 27 Steps of May.

The platform will also feature three new original series: Tunnel by producer Shanty Harmayn, Saiyo Sakato by husband and wife team Salman Aristo and Gina S. Noer, and Indonesia’s remake of Upper East Siders teen drama Gossip Girl by director Nia Dinata.

Go-Play comes in a separate app to Gojek’s super app, and it is now available for download on Google Play with a rollout to the Apple App Store expected to follow in the near future.

The subscription fee for the service is IDR89,000 (US$6.27) per month, significantly higher than the monthly fees of its closest local/regional competitors: Hooq at IDR69,000 (US$4.86), iFlix at IDR39,000 (US$2.75), and Viu at IDR30,000 (US$2.11). Users can pay using Go-Pay directly on Go-Play, or alternatively through the Go-Bills tab in the Gojek app.
