It’s a big week for women in Jakarta. This Saturday morning, hundreds are expected to come out for the Jakarta’s Women’s March at Bunderan HI, where they will demonstrate to demand the government do more to advance the cause of women’s rights and equality.

Why the need for such a march? Well, to get a truly in-depth understanding of the huge issues facing women in Indonesia, you should head to Hause Rooftop in Kuningan Tuesday night to attend “A Dialogue on Women’s Work” being put on by the Jakarta Development Network (JDN).

JDN is a group of professionals in the development and environmental sector who have come together to organize talks on serious issues in a more laid-back, casual setting (the Rp 100k entrance fee includes a choice of alcoholic (or non-alcoholic) beverages from the Hause bar).

Gender inequality is a major issue facing Indonesia. Last year, it ranked 88th out of 144 countries in the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Report and ranked 107th out of 144 for Economic Participation and Opportunity.

In Indonesia, women are more likely to face unemployment as well as unfair conditions in informal employment and lower pay, which is not just a rights issue but also holds them back from contributing to the national economy.

To examine these issues in greater depth, JDN is hosting a panel discussion featuring four development experts who are leading efforts to improve the working world for Indonesian women.

  • Anis Hidayah, Executive Director, Migrant Care – Anis works on behalf of the millions of Indonesian women and men who seek work abroad to feed their families and face serious risk of exploitation and abuse. She has dedicated her career to the protection of migrant workers.
  • Emma Allen, Country Economist, Asian Development Bank – Emma has a special interest in economic governance and human capital development. Prior to joining ADB, Emma was a Labor Market Economist with the ILO and worked in several locations, including South Africa, Geneva, Tanzania and Indonesia.
  • Francesco D’Ovidio, Country Director, ILO Indonesia and Timor-Leste – Francesco is a Jurist in International Law with 15 years of International working experience in 29 countries. Prior to his appointment in Jakarta, Francesco held the position of ILO Country Director in Pakistan.
  • Dr. Nicola Nixon, Counsellor for Poverty and Social Development, Australian Embassy, Indonesia – Nicola has over 20 years experience as an academic and development professional. She has worked for UN agencies, international NGOs and for the Australian aid program since 2011. She has a PhD from Melbourne University.

The event should not only serve as an excellent primer on these important issues but, based on the previous JDN event, also a great opportunity to meet and network with like-minded individuals from development, environmental, media and diplomatic circles.
