Popular theme park Dunia Fantasi, SeaWorld and all other attractions in tourist draw Ancol will be shut to general visitors on June 4, as the North Jakarta waterfront complex is set to host the capital’s inaugural Formula E race.
Ancol announced the closure on its official website, noting that the area will be inaccessible to general visitors — either those who hold day passes or longer term passes — on race day.
Formula E ticket holders, however, get the benefit of access to all leisure venues in Ancol on June 4, in addition to access to watch the race up close.
Tickets for the race day start from IDR250K (US$17.08) before tax. By comparison, a regular day pass to just Dunia Fantasi also starts at IDR250K.
You can buy tickets through the Jakarta E-Prix 2022 official website here.
Practice sessions, qualifying, and race for the Jakarta E-Prix are all set to take place on June 4. The all-important race is scheduled to start at 3pm.
In 2019, Jakarta secured the right to host one Formula E race each year for the next five years. Central Jakarta’s National Monument (Monas) was chosen to host what was supposed to be the country’ first electric-powered car race due to its iconic landmark status. However, the central government put the kibosh on the plan as the site is home to several cultural heritage landmarks and government offices.
The first Jakarta race was scheduled for June 6, 2020, but the event was postponed amid rising coronavirus cases in the capital and throughout Indonesia.
The race was postponed again in 2021 as the country was in the midst of its most devastating COVID-19 crisis.
The Jakarta Formula E race has been dogged in controversy due to the provincial government’s insistence on allocating huge sums for the event — larger than the city’s budget for flood mitigation, for instance.
