Altin Gün: a Turkish Psychedelic Folk Concert

Altin Gün was founded by bassist Jasper Verhulst and guitarist Ben Rider in Amsterdam, when they had the idea to start a Turkish psychedelic folk band upon their fascination of the genre. Turkish psychedelic music, or sometimes referred as Anatolian rock, is a music genre that first emerged during the mid-60s as a mixture of western rock music from bands such as Led Zeppelin and The Rolling Stones, and traditional Turkish folk music.

The Dutch/Turkish band interprets songs from Turkish artists from the ’70s with a modern flair. As the band is gaining popularity in Europe, they performed in sold-out concerts in major venues in Amsterdam, Paris, Istanbul and Berlin. A nominee for the 2020 Grammy Awards in the Best World Music Album category, Altin Gün has also opened for Australian psychedelic rock acts King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard and Tame Impala.

Friday, Dec. 13 at Erasmus Huis, Kuningan, South Jakarta from 7.30pm onwards. Free entry, no RSVP required

Opera Gandari

Opera Gandari is based on poet and editor Goenawan Mohamad’s poem titled Gandari, which tells the story of a minor character from Sanskrit epic Mahabharata. In the story, Gandara blindfolded herself as a show of solidarity for her husband Destarastra, who was born blind, and as an expression of sadness to the death of her sons — named Kurawa — in the Kurusetra war against the Pandawa.

The opera marks the third adaptation of the poem, as it was previously adapted in 2014 and 2015. Directed by performance artist Melati Suryodarmo, Opera Gandari features Tony Prabowo as the music composer, Bernadeta Astari as Soprano, senior actress Christine Hakim as the narrator, with Jay Subyakto as the artistic director.

Saturday, Dec. 14 – Sunday, Dec. 15 at Graha Bakti Budaya in Taman Ismail Marzuki (TIM), Central Jakarta, from 8pm onwards. Tickets start from IDR250,000 (bronze) to IDR950,000 (platinum), available to purchase on Loket.com.
