Get up close and personal with the legend of Prince Diponegoro at this amazing exhibit at Galeri Nasional (Feb 5 – Mar 8)

“The Capture of Dipongoro” (1857) by Raden Saleh

Prince Diponegoro, who lived from 1785-1855, is one of the most important figures in our nation’s history but he exists somewhere between myth and legend in the imagination of most Indonesians. Thus, understanding Diponegoro is a way of understanding Indonesia itself.

There’s no better place to get a crash course on the Prince and his impact on Indonesian culture than at a historic exhibition, currently taking place at Galeri Nasional. Titled “A Prince for All Seasons: Diponegoro in the Memory of Nation, from Raden Saleh to the Present,” the exhibition examines extraordinary life through the eyes of classical painters, contemporary artists as well as the general public.

The highlight of the exhibition is the newly restored “The Capture of Dipongeoro” (1857) by Raden Saleh, one of the most iconic of all Indonesia n paintings. Also on exhibit will be Diponegoro’s actual “holy war” white tabard (jubah) and pusaka pike (tombak).

In addition to the historical artifacts, there are numerous contemporary takes on Diponegoro, including pop art and comic books.

Definitely one of the best art exhibitions we’ve seen in Jakarta in a long time and a must-visit for any and all culture vultures.
