This year’s Jakarta International BNI Java Jazz Festival‘s lineup is packed to the brim with some seriously impressive names in music. Artists fresh from the 2018 Grammy awards will stand alongside Indonesian jazz icons and hundreds of other talented musicians from here and overseas.

But with three days, 300+ artists and more than 90 shows, spectators will be spoilt for choice. These are the artists we won’t be missing at this year’s festival.

Note: Some artists are playing their own special show not covered by general admission tickets

INTERNATIONAL ACTS

Daniel Caesar (special show)

With his beautiful harmonies, gospel-inspired basslines and soft guitar chords, Daniel Caesar has only moved from strength to strength since his critically acclaimed 2014 debut EP, ‘Praise Break’. The 22-year-old R&B/soul artist was nominated for two Grammy awards last year, narrowly missing out to Bruno Mars both times. Already described as ‘one of 2018’s most promising voices’ by Billboard, Caesar’s is definitely a show not to be missed.

Jhené Aiko

American R&B/Soul artist Jhené Aiko is definitely one to watch out for. Last year she released her second album, TRIP, to critical acclaim and huge commercial success, and she has plenty of collaborations with A-list artists under her belt, including Kendrick Lamar, Big Sean and Drake. Her hit ‘The Worst’ won a BET award and was nominated for a Grammy, so get in early to see this rising star.

Goo Goo Dolls (special show)

Do the Dolls really need an introduction? The American three-piece rock band are of course famous for their 1998 hit ‘Iris’ and will no doubt bring a dose of good old nostalgia to the festival this year.

Vanessa Williams

Although starting her career in the public eye as winner of the ‘Miss America Beauty Pageant’ of 1983, Williams’ love is music and she has produced a slew of successful albums over the past 4 decades, including Oscar-winning track ‘Colors of the Wind’, from Disney’s ‘Pocahontus’.

INDONESIAN ACTS

Glenn Fredly

It’s been 23 years since this R&B singer-songwriter from Maluku was discovered after winning a singing contest. He hasn’t let up since, releasing more than ten albums so far. He’s also taken on roles including film producer and coach on the reality TV series The Voice Indonesia.

Margie Segers Motown

The grand dame of jazz in Indonesia, Margie Segers was arguably one of the most instrumental forces behind the genre’s popularity explosion in Indonesia from the 1970s onwards. The Dutch-Indonesian learned from the best (Buby Chen, Jack Lesmana and Mang Udel) and has been entrancing audiences for decades now.

Dira Sugandi

Known and loved nationwide for her powerful voice, Dira will return to the JJF again this year after gracing the stage in 2017. Her strikingly soulful voice and electric stage presence bring her performances alive. She’s shared shows with performers including David Foster, Jason Mraz and Andrea Bocelli over the years.
