This year was the year of the dangdut in Indonesia (well, just like every other year, to be honest). From a song about tainted alcohol to a woman singing about where it hurts after a heartbreak, we can all agree that it is extremely difficult to get these songs out of our heads.

These were the five most searched Indonesian songs in 2014, according to Google:

5. Julia Perez – Aku Rapopo

YouTube video

‘Aku Rapopo’ (‘I’m alright’ in Javanese) is about Julia Perez being an estranged wife who wants a divorce from her unfaithful husband. This video is probably famous for the way Julia Perez expertly suckles on her heart-shaped lollipop.

4. Utopia – Hujan

YouTube video

This upbeat pop rock tune about rain is no different to most other generic Indonesian pop songs out there. Somehow, this track, which was released way back in 2007, made a comeback as the fourth most searched song in Indonesia in 2014.

3. Tulus – Sepatu

YouTube video

Indonesia’s answer to Michael Bublé, Tulus enjoyed a really successful 2014 thanks to his catchy jazz-infused pop tunes. You can hear his major hit ‘Sepatu’ (shoes) everywhere you go, so much so that we’ve already gotten pretty sick of it to be honest.

2. Juwita Bahar – Oplosan

YouTube video

We think the dance in this music video should have become more famous than Gangnam Style. Despite all appearances, the song actually has a very noble message: put the lid on that bottle of oplosan (tainted alcohol) if you value your life.

1. Cita Citata – Sakitanya Tuh Disini

YouTube video

Hands down THE anthem of 2014. Cita Citata shot to stardom after the release of ‘Sakitnya Tuh Disini’ (It hurts right here), in which she points to where it hurts after being cheated on by her man. This is modern dangdut at its finest, and it more than deserves the top spot.
