For the first time in a long time we’ve got some pretty good gigs to look forward to here in Jakarta, including some amazing acts at Java Jazz, Australian rockers Tame Impala and the (possible) return of Morrisey.
But before any of that, a lot of indie rock fans are geeking out about a gig happening on Feb 12 at the Energy Building in SCBD (of all places). Canadian indie rockers Stars are coming to Jakarta for the very first time for what the concert promoter Prasvana promises will be an “intimate” performance.
If you’re not familiar with Stars, they’re known as one of Canada’s biggest and most successful indie acts. Their breakout album was 2004’s “Set Yourself on Fire”. The top singles from that album, “Your Ex-Lover is Dead”, provides an excellent example of what one critic called the band’s “beautiful, eloquent indie pop”, featuring lush instrumentations and nuanced vocals used to elaborate themes of melancholy and nostalgia.
Their most recent album, “No One is Lost” has been praised by critics as a fun return to form after the band’s last few slightly existential album (a topic made fun of in the below video), with plenty of tracks that are full of pop-y pleasures and danceable beats.
