Public celebrations
Instead of focusing most of the festivities around the areas of the National Monument (Monas), the Hotel Indonesia Roundabout and Ancol, the new Jakarta administration has decided to spread things out a little more this New Yea’rs Eve, with public celebrations set to take place all throughout the capital.
Public NYE festivities will take place this year In Central Jakarta around Monas and Jalan MH Thamrin, in South Jakarta at Setu Babakan, in East Jakarta at Taman Mini Indonesia Indah, in North Jakarta at BMW Park and in West Jakarta at the mayor’s office. In Pulau Seribu district (The Thousand Islands) there will be public festivities on Pulau Karya.
The government is also supporting a culinary festival featuring foods from across the archipelago that will take place at the Park and Ride facility located next to the Sari Pan Pacific hotel on Jl Thamrin. At 7 pm at the same complex, the government is sponsoring a a mass wedding ceremony for 524 couples.
Note that major roads including Sudirman and Thamrin will not be closed to cars as in past years (in other words, they should be open as usual), so be careful as massive traffic jams can occur in areas near public festivities and nightlife hotspots, especially around midnight.
