Following the critical success of Marlina The Murderer in Four Acts, another Indonesian film may soon join the newly burgeoning genre of “satay westerns” (as some critics dubbed Marlina, which was set in the present day but beautifully evoked the look and feel of Western revenge epic set along the vast rolling hills of Sumba).

Buffalo Boys, helmed by first-time director Mike Wiluan (who served as a producer on several other notable Indonesian genre films including Beyond Skyline, Dead Mine, Headshot and Macabre) takes places during the Dutch colonial era of Indonesia, but, judging from this totally badass trailer, it looks like the emphasis will be less on historical accuracy and more on pulpy over-the-top thrills (Tarantino-esque could certainly be used to describe it).

According to the official press release, the film’s plot pertains to two brothers who return to their ancestral home in Java after spending years exiled in America’s Wild West in order to take revenge on the cruel Dutch ruler who murdered their father, the land’s former sultan.

The film stars a number of well-known Indonesian actors including Ario Bayu, Pevita Pearce, Happy Salma, Hannah Al Rashid and Alex Abbad. It is scheduled for release later this year but no exact premiere date has been set. We can’t wait!
