Diffability (stems from ‘differently able’) is a concept that acknowledges and even celebrates that people with special needs, who are usually labeled as ‘disabled’ (or less able), often have extraordinary abilities, including in dance. This ballet gala performance celebrates this concept by featuring outstanding diffable dancers from across the globe as well as inclusive dances with Indonesia’s diffable and non-diffable dancers. It will include performances by:

  • Marc Brew: An Australian, trained as a professional dancer. He was 20 years old when he was paralyzed from the waist down after a car accident. Currently, he is a performer, a choreographer, and a dancer with many international awards
  • Candoco Dance Company’s Studies for C: A piece inspired by Tennessee Williams’ play Camino Real and Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot, danced by London-based contemporary dance company of diffable and non-diffable dancers
  • Queensland Ballet : Brings the beauty and purity of ballet via Black Swan pas de deux and Spartacus excerpts
  • Magali Saby’s La Fille de l’Air: Magali is a French diffable dancer, model and actress. She choreographed this piece to be premiered in Indonesia, and it will be danced by herself and five professional Indonesian dancers
  • Universal Ballet : Bringing the best of Asian ballets
  • CANdoDANCE: Consists of 14 Indonesian dancers, some with hearing and speaking impairment, which was coached by Candoco Dance Company’s Mirjam Gurtner and Tanja Erhart since July 2017
  • Collaborative performances between EKI Dance Company (Indonesian’s premier dance company) and Disabled Children’s Counseling Foundation (YPAC)

The gala takes place on Saturday at Teater Jakarta in Cikini’s Taman Ismail Marzuki with performances at 1pm and 7pm. Tickets start at Rp 280k. For more info and to purchase tickets: www.ballet.id/gala2017

The 100% Manusia (100% Human) film festival aims to “facilitate change in our society by raising awareness and supporting human empowerment for a better future”. The festival’s line-up of movies, screened at venues across Jakarta from Sept 22-Oct 1, tackle issues including human rights, diversity, gender and HIV/AIDS and were chosen to create platforms to discuss and exchange ideas free of labels, stereotypes, prejudices and negative stigmas.

The festival includes award-winning films from across the globe, from the UK to India and of course Indonesia. We’re especially looking forward to the critically-acclaimed opening night film Die Beautiful from the Philipines as well as Taxi Stories, a mosaic film featuring stories set in Beijing, Hong Kong and Jakarta where “the paths of the rich and poor cross one another in and around taxis”.
