Watch 1965 Indonesian classic “Tiga  Dara” gloriously restored for the big screen

YouTube video

“Tiga Dara” (“Three Maidens”) is one of the most beloved films in Indonesian film history, a musical comedy with a decidedly progressive message for its time that still managed to be a critical and financial success (this Wikipedia article gives a great overview of the film’s history and legacy).

For many years, the only original prints of the film were in terrible condition due to age, wear and tear. Fortunately, the current owners of “Tiga Dara”, SA Films, arranged for it to be restored by an Italian film laboratory last year at great expense – restoration work included the reinsertion of lost scenes using extant copies of the film – and transferred it into ultra 4k resolution. The restored masterpiece will be shown for a brief period of time at select 21 Cinemas, including those in Plaza Senayan and Pondok Indah Mall. This is a very rare opportunity for fans of classic Indonesian cinema to experience it on the big screen. For screening times and more info go to 21 Cineplex’s website.

There will also be plenty of masterclasses and workshops for those looking to sharpen their creative skills, including a session with Oscar-winning director of photography Russell Carpenter. Of course there will be plenty of exhibitors from whom you can purchase rare toys, comics and memorabilia as well. Popcon Asia is taking place all weekend at the Jakarta Convention Center and daily tickets are  Rp 65k. For more info go to http://2016.popconasia.com/
