Question authority at the “Ones Who Are Being Controlled” exhibition (Opening Saturday)
This solo exhibition by Otty Widasari utilizes archived footage from Indonesia’s colonial era to investigate ideas about authority and control. A sequel to “Ones Who Looked at the Presence”, this exhibition presents the results of Otty’s expanded exploration about social gestures – from people’s expression when they face the camera to an awareness of the subject’s body language towards the function of the camera. “Ones Who Looked at the Presence” examined the footages produced between 1912-1914, while the “Ones Who Are Being Controlled” examines footage from 1917-1930s.
Otty’s paintings and video works are an experimental-anthropological examination analyzing the camera as a machine, the discourse of modernism behind it, public response, as well as the performativity phenomenon which simultaneously surrounds it.
