For her 27th birthday, Indonesian singer Raisa aiming to raise Rp 27 million to buy books and school equipment for children in need

Indonesian pop star Raisa Andriana is arguably one of the country’s most beloved contemporary celebrities thanks to her numerous mega hit songs and inoffensive good girl persona.

It appears the diva truly has a heart of gold, as, for her 27th birthday today, she is encouraging the public to help out children in need of books and school equipment on the remote island of Biak, Papua, instead of showering her with presents.

To do that, Raisa has started an online fundraiser aiming to raise Rp 27 million on charity crowdfunding site Kitabisa. On the page, Raisa wrote that the money will go towards buying books, shoes and school uniforms for children in Biak, as well as pay for the operational costs of @donasibuku.id, a privately run charity organization that collects and donates books to poor children around Indonesia.

At the time of writing, over Rp 23 million has already been raised for the campaign meaning she’ll almost certainly top her goal.

Raisa’s campaign comes a month after President Joko Widodo announced that the government will waive shipping fees of books being sent to remote regions of Indonesia once a month. True to his word, the shipment of books to remote regions using state-owned courier PT Pos Indonesia is now free on the 17th of every month.

If you’d like to donate or learn more about Raisa’s fundraiser, go to https://kitabisa.com/ultahraisa. Be sure to also check out organizations like @donasibuku.id or Taman Bacaan Pelangi if you’d like to donate books and/or money to poor children in Indonesia’s remote regions.
