The Australian Embassy will host Festival Sinema Australia Indonesia 2016, an Australian and Indonesian Film Festival showcasing a number of films from both countries, from January 29 until the 31st at Cinema XXI in Plaza Senayan.
Through the festival, the Australian Embassy hopes to highlight the similarities between Australian and Indonesian cinema, particularly in their shared sense of humour, warmth, passion, love of country and ingenuity.
The headlining film screening at Festival Sinema Australia Indonesia 2016 is Australian film ‘The Dressmaker,’ which screens on Saturday January 30. The synopsis for film describes it as a tale of a glamorous woman returns to her small town in rural Australia. “With her sewing machine and haute couture style, she transforms the women and exacts sweet revenge on those who did her wrong.” The Dressmaker stars Kate Winslet and has won a number of awards, including Best Lead Actress at The Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts.
The Indonesian component of the festival features films by local directors including the Mo Brother’s “Killers”, Kamila Andini’s ‘The Mirror Never Lies’ and ‘Grave Torture’ directed by Joko Anwar. The Mirror Never Lies follows a young Bajou girl whose father has been lost at sea.
