Karen’s Diner is going from “get f*cked” to “peace be upon you,” as it dials its rudeness way down for the holy month of Ramadan.
From April 16 to 30, Karen’s Diner is known as Kareem’s Diner in Jakarta – kareem being Arabic for “generous” and is often used in the greeting “Ramadan kareem” (may you have a generous Ramadan).
Muslims are encouraged to be extra kind and extra generous during Ramadan, and the idea is that Kareem’s Diner wait staff – now in Islamic attire – is shedding their renowned rude gimmick in their quest to provide the most pleasant service to customers. Essentially, they are going from “marah” (angry) to “ramah” (friendly).
The campaign is a collaboration between Karen’s Diner and GrabFood, the latter of which is offering dine-in vouchers for Kareem’s Diner on their app.
Australian chain restaurant Karen’s Diner is known for its “great burgers and rude service.” Even though their shtick is well-established by this point, Karen’s Diner foray into Jakarta in late 2022 was met with mixed reactions, with some folks finding the service too distasteful while others found it amusing.
