Before the COVID-19 pandemic, many Indonesians would regularly visit Singapore if only to try out the island state’s iconic dishes, including Hainanese Curry Rice.

If you’re one of those regulars who have been missing Beach Road Scissor Cut Curry Rice’s Hainanese Curry Rice but haven’t been able to visit Singapore since the pandemic started, fret not, as the popular eatery has recently opened its first restaurant in North Jakarta’s Pantai Indah Kapuk (PIK).

Occupying shophouses in Jalan Besar, Beach Road Scissor Cut Curry Rice is famous in Singapore as one of those unpretentious places for inexpensive quick and tasty meals. As the name suggests, the breaded pork or chicken cutlets and other items are cut using a pair of scissors.

At Beach Road, you can pick any meat and veggies you want to go with rice and have them drenched in copious amounts of curry gravy and sauces. It’s a simple, messy, and satisfying dish for those looking for a filling meal well into midnight as the eatery opens until 3am.

Hainanese curry rice is believed to have been created in Singapore by Hainanese chefs, as opposed to it being a dish from Hainan. It is influenced by different cultures including British and Peranakan represented by the accompaniment to the rice including pork chop, chap chye or braised cabbage and braised pork belly, and the curry gravy, which is generally milder than curry from India.

Jakarta’s Beach Road is located at Pantjoran PIK, a newly opened Chinatown-themed culinary destination. Distinct from its OG Singapore location with its rustic and aged charm, the Jakarta restaurant appears squeaky clean and fancier while the menu is pork and lard-free.

Prices in the set menu range from IDR45,000 for Chicken Chop Curry Rice; IDR55,000 for Crispy Beef Chop Curry Rice, Braised Beef Curry Rice, and Sambal Prawn Curry Rice, among others; and IDR75,000 The All Star Curry Rice and Seafood Set Curry Rice. You can add other vegetables, deep-fried dishes, as well as a variety of curries as your side dish, though the Spiced Corn Ribs (IDR35,000) appears to be the favorite here. All prices are before taxes and service charge.

For refreshments, you can opt for beer or your favorite Singaporean style beverages to enhance your experience such as Teh Tarik, Coffee C, Iced Milo Dinosaur, or Housemade Barley, as well as other fusion drinks such as Iced Chendol Coffee or Iced Coffee Gula Melaka.
