We were excited to hear about the planned opening of the Lenggang Jakarta food court in National Monument (Monas) in early June. But it seems we didn’t even have to wait that long as the food court’s opening has been brought forward to today.

Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama himself is scheduled to inaugurate the official opening of Lenggang Jakarta this afternoon.

“Lenggang Jakarta actually had its soft launch in April 17, 2015, but today it’s officially open,” said the head of Jakarta’s Middle, Small and Micro Enterprises Agency, Joko Kundaryo, as quoted by Metro TV.

Lenggang Jakarta has the capacity to house 329 kaki lima vendors in its kiosks. But not all the kiosks have been filled as of today.

For over a year, the government has been fighting to move the vendors out of the Monument’s open area and into the designated commercial space, but encountered strong resistance along the way.
