You no longer have to go to Japan to take Boomerang clips of stacked jiggly pancakes for the ‘gram, because now, Jakarta has Gram.
The extra fluffy Japanese pancakes are actually called soufflé pancakes, and the dessert trend has already been picked up by several cafes all over Jakarta in recent years.
But now, one of the OG jiggly pancake specialists has arrived in the Indonesian capital. Hailing from Osaka, Gram Cafe & Pancakes opened its doors on July 11 at Plaza Indonesia, Central Jakarta.
The brand is famous for its wobbly, thick pancakes — slow cooked on low heat and whipped to attain their fluffy, cloud-like texture.
Gram’s signature Premium Pancakes are clearly the stars here — there’s even a dedicated schedule for them at 11am, 3pm, and 6pm, daily, and they will only serve 20 portions (!) per session. To ensure their freshness, each pancake is cooked to order and the process can take up to 30 minutes.
The Premium Pancakes are actually pretty simple — they consists of a stack of three 4 cm-thick pancakes served with house-made butter, whipped cream, and maple syrup.
You can get their signature dish for IDR150,000 (US$10.76) before tax, which is really quite pricey for a plate of pancakes in Jakarta. That’s because, in an interview with Nibble, Gram Jakarta co-owner Brian Setyadarma said all the ingredients for the jiggly pancakes are directly imported from Japan.
Gram also serves a number of variations on regular, non-jiggly pancakes if that’s more to your liking (or if you miss one of the Premium Pancakes sessions), such as Caramelized Banana Pancakes and Salmon and Avocado Pancakes.
Before Jakarta, Gram also debuted in Singapore in June.
