Burgreens slices into vegan pizzeria scene with Max’s Pizza

Whether you’re vegan or not, the emergence of more plant-based options is always welcome with open arms in Jakarta. Burgreens, one of the pioneering and leading plant-based chains in Jakarta, is now offering a twist on one of people’s favorite comfort foods through Max’s Pizza.

Having only opened its doors last weekend in South Jakarta’s Kemang, Max’s Pizza promises a variety of plant-based pizza that will make you go, “was that really vegan?” The restaurant bakes up Meatball Pizza, Margherita Pizza, Rendang Pizza, the gluten-free Truffle Mushroom Pizza, and Pesto Chick’n Pizza, with toppings of vegan cheese and plant-based meat on crispy thin crust.

All of Max’s pizzas are priced at IDR38,500 per slice and IDR275,000 for a whole pie — you can also request for a gluten-free dough for the latter. Other items on their menu include truffle mushroom, rendang, and Chick’n Pop rice bowls; salad and grilled veggies; snacks such as Garlic Bites gluten-free balls, truffle potato wedges, and cookies; as well as other Burgreens’ mainstay drinks lineup such as the Es Kopi Susu Abang Max, kombuchas, and vegan boba.

To satiate our curiosity, we ordered two slices of Truffle Mushroom Pizza and Happy Cola (IDR38,500) this afternoon after seeing that all varieties of pizzas were sold out on a trusted food delivery app. As far as one slice of pizza goes, it did not disappoint — the mixture of truffle sauce, vegan cheddar, oregano, onion, champignon mushroom, and fresh parsley made for a nice umami treat.

As a side note, you might want to be really careful when heating up your slice at home. We made the mistake of heating it a tad too long and ended with the toppings melting all over our plate.

The Happy Cola came in separate parts — or as we say, a deconstructed cola — with its cola essence, soda water, and iced cubes in a tall plastic glass. According to the drink’s description, the cola essence is made of cinnamon, nutmeg, star anise, coriander seeds, and a splash of lime, which actually pretty much nailed the OG cola as we know it. While Happy Cola is available at all other Burgreens outlet, this was our first time trying it and we can see ourselves ordering the beverage alongside our plant-based meals in near future.

We conclude that this has been such a nice first encounter with Max’s Pizza and we’re looking forward to trying other varieties that feature plant-based meats. Another lesson we learned, by the way: if you find that items are sold out at Max’s Pizza when you want to make the order on the app, come back some time later as the restaurant continues to update its digital menu as it bakes more pies in the oven.
