Coconuts Jakarta Bars & Nightlife
Some people would say that Jakarta’s nightlife is the city’s best kept secret. For the capital of the most-populous Muslim majority country in the world, Jakarta’s nightlife can be surprisingly wild. At one end of the spectrum there are increasingly sophisticated nightclubs and bars featuring international DJs and mixologists. At the other end of the spectrum there are shady, semi-underground clubs that offer all sorts of illicit pleasures late into the night and, in some cases, past the break of dawn. Much of Jakarta’s upscale nightlife these days is centered around SCBD (the Sudirman Central Business District) Senopati, Senayan and Mega Kuningan. Posh new clubs and cocktail-centric restaurant/bars are opening in those areas all the time. Among those that have stood the test of time are X2, Lucy in the Sky, Fable and Emporium, all regularly packed on the weekends with the capital’s see-and-be-seen crowd. Nightclubs like Dragonfly, Blowfish and Colosseum up north and Jenja to the south regularly bring in top international DJs to spin the decks for discerning Jakarta EDM fans. A plethora of rooftop bars are a relatively recent addition to the nightlife scene, with Skye and Cloud Lounge being among the most impressive, with settings atop massive skyscrapers offering views unlike anywhere else in Jakarta. The dark side of Jakarta’s nightlife scene is slowly getting cleaned up, with the closures of the infamous Stadium and more recently Milles a sign that the government is getting serious about putting an end to such shady establishments. But for those willing to risk it, there are still venues out there where you can party all night long and walk out of the club to face the harsh light of day.
