Indonesia is eagerly anticipating the first of five presidential debates on Thursday evening, pitting incumbent President Joko Widodo and his running mate Ma’ruf Amin against Prabowo Subianto and his running mate Sandiaga Uno as they tackle issues related to law, human rights, corruption and terrorism.
We’re no political experts (though some of us here are self-proclaimed political nerds) so we can’t really predict who’s gonna come out on top out in the verbal sparring match. What we can do, however, is predict what specific issues and promises both presidential tickets are going to mention in tomorrow’s debate in their bid to woo voters.
But presidential debates in Indonesia are, generally speaking, bland at best (certainly you couldn’t hope for anything as exhilarating as Clinton v Trump).
Fortunately we’re used to making our own fun and making fun of local politics. In that spirit, we bring you Coconuts Jakarta’s Presidential Drinking Game. The rules are simple: if any of the candidates mention anything related to the specific issues below, you must take the corresponding number of shots of your favored beverage (or sips, if you’re not trying to get totally wasted). More drinks will be required the less likely the issue will be mentioned, and vice versa.
So get your glasses ready and let’s play:
If someone says…
- We must introduce tougher preventative laws to prevent terrorist attacks (1 shot)
- We must get tougher on Papuan separatists (1 shot)
- The KPK cannot be weakened (1 shot)
- We must better guarantee press freedoms (1 shot)
- Law enforcement must be better funded (1 shot)
- The military must be better funded (1 shot)
- Anything related to the ‘98 pro-democracy activist kidnappings (1 shot)
- Ulemas must be protected from criminalization (2 shots)
- KPK officials must be given better protections (2 shots)
- We must keep suspected terrorists under surveillance for longer periods (2 shots)
- Stop connecting Islam to terrorism / terrorism has no religion (2 shots)
- KUHP must be revised to include more clauses protecting the nation’s morality (2 shots)
- UU ITE must be revised so it doesn’t shield those in power from legitimate criticism (3 shots)
- We must introduce death penalty for corruption convicts (3 shots)
- People’s right to worship must be better protected, regardless of religion (4 shots)
- UU ITE must be eradicated (4 shots)
- We must eradicate the blasphemy law (5 shots)
- LGBT must be made illegal (5 shots)
- The death penalty must be erased (5 shots)
- We must give justice to victims of ‘65 communist massacre (5 shots)
- Law enforcement should not get involved in sexual relations between consenting adults of any gender (8 shots)
- Medical marijuana should be legalized (8 shots)
- Being an atheist should not be a crime (9 shots)
- Recreational marijuana should be legalized (9 shots)
- Same-sex marriage must be allowed (20 shots)
As an added bonus, you must double your shot intake should both candidate pairs agree on any given issue.
