At least 15 people died and 27 are still missing after Mount Semeru erupted last Saturday evening, with thousands more people displaced. The volcano, which is located between East Java’s Malang and Lumajang regencies, sent a massive plume of ash into the skies over the weekend, as seen in a number of viral videos:

Authorities are still conducting searches for more victims buried under the rubbles and volcanic ash amid the pouring rain and volcanic activities. According to the Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG), Semeru erupted again this morning at around 8:55am, noting that it’s still under Level II alert or “vigilant.”
Following the eruption, many residents around Semeru are now in need of food, face masks, and various sanitary products, as well as blankets and clean water.
