Fact: Pornography is banned in Indonesian internet (though that doesn’t stop a lot of people accessing it through digital back alleys). Even so, many Indonesian online news portals constantly skirt the line, stepping over that ‘adult content’ boundary from time to time.
The most popular Indonesian news websites know quite well that sex sells, and sometimes we can’t help but do a double take at some of the ridiculous headlines on sexual topics out there. They wouldn’t be so funny if they weren’t so absurdly out of place and hypocritical in the context of Indonesia’s traditional conservative values that these media outlets pretend to uphold.
If the government is blocking internet porn to prevent its citizens from having perverted morals, then shouldn’t media also be blamed for putting all our minds in the gutter?
So here are some of the most ridiculously funny sexual headlines we’ve seen on Indonesian news websites. Mind you, this isn’t a comprehensive ‘all time’ list; just some of the most WTF headlines that we came across over the past few days:
1. “Masturbation is healthier than brushing teeth everyday” – Liputan 6, May 10

Dear god, don’t tell your teenage boy that.
2. “Women who smoke weed are at risk of having dry Miss V” – Liputan 6, May 11

Note: Miss V = vagina. But let’s not say it out loud.
3. “Wow, with celebrity prostitutes, men don’t have to wear a condom” – Warta Kota, May 11

Wow! That is a truly essential piece of information! Do you happen to have the prostitutes’ numbers, Warta Kota?
4. “Amel Alvi used to be named Amelia Alfiani, here are her sexy photos” – Detik, May 11

…but we’re sorry we have to blur out her cleavage, you perv!
5. “Hot, 20 celebs with hourglass figures” – Viva News, May 11

They don’t even try to hide the fact they’re objectifying women.
6. “Taylor Swift wears a super-short skirt, try not to drool!” – Kapan Lagi, May 10

We’re pretty sure the only people drooling are the people at Kapan Lagi. They’d probably like to ‘shake it off’, too.
