Just 10 days after 18 people were killed in a horrific accident involving a Metromini bus being hit by a train, yet another tragic accident involving a bus took place today, with a mother and her child being run over by a Metromini in West Jakarta.
The woman, Mutiarsih, and her child, Azam, were hit by the bus on Jalan Meruya Utara while passing Aries park at around 6am today.
“After the incident, Azam could not be helped and died on the scene. The other victim, Mutiarsih, was taken to the Permata Hijau Hospital for treatment,” said Jakarta Police Assistant Commissioner Budiyanto as quoted by Kompas.
After hitting the mother and child, local residents immediately starting throwing stones at the Metromini driver, breaking the bus’ glass.
The driver of the Metromini was saved from the furious mob after being taken into police custody for further investigation at the station.
Although we do not have enough information to know if the accident was entirely the driver’s fault, everybody is well aware that bus drivers in Jakarta are often reckless and often operate without licenses. If the government does not crack down on these drivers severely, we know these sorts of tragedies will continue to take place.
