7 police officers could face disciplinary action thanks to the power of Facebook

We all know Indonesians are social media crazy, but we never thought a Facebook post could actually land police officers in hot water.

On June 11, Facebook user Diki Septerian uploaded these 3 photos to his Facebook account:

In the post’s description, Diki wrote that the photos were taken on June 10 at Jalan Raya Cilincing, North Jakarta. The photos showed three young men, armed with a screwdriver, a knife, and a sickle, robbing a pickup truck in the middle of a traffic jam.

Diki, along with the two robbery victims in the truck, reported the incident to a police outpost about a kilometer from the crime scene. With the photos as proof, they implored the police officers there to chase after the robbers.

Instead, one officer told them to take the matter to a nearby subprecinct police station. Several other nearby police officers were apparently fiddling with their smartphones when they could’ve helped.

At the time of writing, Diki’s post has been shared over 48 thousand times, which is probably more than enough for the police to take notice.

Today, Jakarta Police Chief Tito Karnavian said he will summon North Jakarta Police Chief Susetio Cahyadi to discuss the seven police officers who allegedly neglected their duties in relation to Diki’s report.

The seven officers are currently being investigated by Internal Affairs, and could lose their right to a promotion in the future as a result of the outcome.

Meanwhile, Tito said he wants the street robbers in Cilincing caught.

“They act in groups. We’ve already mapped [their locations], we just have to intensify the security [in the area],” he said, as quoted by Vivanews today.

So if you’re ever dissatisfied by the police, complaining about them on social media has proven to be quite effective.
