BREAKING: Jessica Wongso sentenced to 20 years in prison for coffee poisoning murder

What was arguably the criminal trial of the century in Indonesia finally came to a conclusion today as judges found Jessica Keumala Wongso guilty for the murder of her friend, Wayan Mirna Salihin.

The judges at the Central Jakarta District Court handed Jessica a 20 year prison sentence, as had been demanded by the prosecutors.

“Jessica Keumala Wongso has been proven and without doubt to be guilty of murder,” said Head Judge Kisworo as he read out the sentence.

Speaking to the media following the verdict, Jessica’s head legal counselor Otto Hasibuan accused the judges of being unfair with their decision. They are planning to file an appeal to a higher court.

Jessica was arrested by the Jakarta Metro Police after being accused of slipping cyanide into Mirna’s Vietnamese iced coffee at Olivier Café in Grand Indonesia mall in January. The case has generated huge interest in Indonesia, with crowds packing out the court during the trial and TV networks showing it live, and in Australia, where the victim and alleged murderer studied together at a design college.
