Bangkok is becoming the hip new stop for international indie bands on tour and we couldn’t be happier. of Montreal, the cult-favorite American synth-pop band, will stop in Thailand for the first time for a concert on August 9 at Live RCA.
This comes fresh on the heels of last week’s show by Swedish dream pop outfit The Radio Dept. Both bands are brought in by local indie rock promoters ‘Have You Heard?’ who’ve been responsible for bringing independent bands such as Beach Fossils, Neon Indian, and Mac DeMarco to Thailand.
of Montreal is set to perform their ever-evolving blend of glam rock, funk posturing and psychedelica that’s always been based on a deep and abiding love for 80s AF synth.
The group, founded by Kevin Barnes two decades ago, has racked up an impressive number of highly-acclaimed albums featuring hits such as “Wraith Pinned to the Mist” and “Heimdalsgate Like a Promethean Curse”.
Barnes has acknowledged that he is heavily influenced by pop music of the 60s. His group has recorded for seminal 90s label Elephant 6, which featured many notable bands inspired by 60s pop, such as Apples in Stereo.
Now, with 13 studio albums to their name and a 14th on the way, entitled “Innocence Reaches,” out on August 12, the one consistency on of Montreal’s lineup is Barnes. He’s the only permanent member.
French DJ Breakbot has a concert the same night as the of Montreal show, so it might be hard to decide what to do. But hey, that’s a pretty great problem to have in a city that boasted few international indie shows even as recently as five years ago.
At the show, expect tracks from the new album “Innocence Reaches” to show up on the set list alongside all of the band’s biggest hits.
