A young German woman died after falling off a cliff in Bali’s Uluwatu area on Wednesday night.
The 23-year-old had been on holiday, spending time at a cafe with friends at the top of Suluban Beach, when afterwards the group decided to chat near the edge of the cliff.
At around 1:30am, the woman went to relieve herself and then slipped and fell off the edge of the cliff, plummeting 80 meters down, according to police.
It’s alleged that the woman had been consuming alcohol prior to her tragic accident and that she had climbed over a barrier when she moved to relieve herself.
“Due to the conditions, it was dark, the victim did not realize she was urinating on the edge of cliff. And when she got up, she slipped and fell to the bottom of the cliff,” South Kuta Police Chief I Nengah Patrem told VIVA News.
Because it was so dark and because of the steep terrain to reach the body, it took lifeguards about four hours after the woman’s fall to successfully evacuate the German’s body.
“Lifeguards at that time immediately moved to evacuate because there was still access to the path where the victim was. We feared the tide would rise so we immediately took action,” head of Denpasar Search and Rescue, Ketut Gede Ardana said.
After the woman was evacuated, her body was brought to the morgue in Denpasar’s Sanglah Hospital.
“The victim was found lying on a rock at the bottom of the cliff. The victim was dead with a number of open wounds and fractures all over her body,” South Kuta Criminal Investigation Unit Insp. Andi Muhamad Nurul Yakin told NusaBali.
There was CCTV footage at the scene, according to Yakin.
“The description of her voice is in accordance with the surveillance camera mounted near the scene. The victim did climb the barrier that was not too high, then peed off the edge of the cliff,” Yakin said.
“It’s our initial suspicion that the victim fell down while urinating in a drunken state,” he stated.
