An online petition is in the media spotlight after it demanded the Indonesian government intervene to quash what it described as noise pollution and debauchery in Bali’s popular tourism hotspot of Canggu.

“End Extreme Noise in Canggu” was uploaded three weeks ago on Change.org by a user who goes by the name P. Dian. Per this article’s publication, the online petition has been signed by more than 7,000 people.

Addressed as an open letter to President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Uno, and Bali Governor Wayan Koster, among others, the petition lamented “booming sound from open bars” in Batu Bolong and Berawa, which is said could go on until 3am and, in some cases, 4am.

“Almost every night of the week, every week, every month before and now after the pandemic,” the petition said.

The petition also highlighted “indecent and disrespectful acts”, which are especially troubling when the clubs and bars are located near temples. These acts supposedly include “drunkenness, sexual behaviors, urinating” and “possibly consumption of illegal substances.”

“We sincerely request the government to immediately pass strict regulations with official and severe sanctions, with strict monitoring by the Satpol PP (Public Order Agency),” the petition reads.

The petitioners are targeting 7,500 signatures in the hope that decision makers will respond.

The petition did not name drop any establishments by name – in fact, it focuses on the general noise pollution and debauchery in the area. However, some commenters specifically targeted Atlas Beach Fest (previously known as Holywings Bali), the latest beach club to open in Berawa.

Coconuts Bali has reached out to representatives of Atlas Beach Fest for comment. To be fair to Atlas Beach Fest, it should be noted that it is not the only establishment in the area – and that Canggu and its surroundings have been rapidly developing in recent years (yes, even through the pandemic).

At any rate, when asked about the petition, Bali Police spokesman Stefanus Satake Bayu Setianto told Coconuts Bali that his department will inspect Canggu establishments to see whether or not they violate their operational hours.

He also advised local authorities to come together with community members who filed the petition in order to come up with solutions.

“Any establishment that has opened in a certain area has already undergone a feasibility study,” he added.
