A World Bank economist reportedly died after drowning in Bali on Saturday.

American woman Aakansha Pande had been swimming at Double Six Beach in the Legian area when strong currents pulled her away from the shore, police told reporters on Sunday.

Bali Police spokesman Hengky Widjaja confirmed the death of the senior health economist.

Lifeguards at the beach helped bring the 38-year-old back to the shore, but apparently Pande could not be revived at the hospital–she was already dead when she arrived, police said.

“The victim was dragged out by the current and then helped by lifeguards and given help. Then the victim was taken to Siloam Hospital around 5:15pm, but the victim’s life could not be saved,” Widjaja stated, as quoted by Jawa Pos.

The woman’s body has been transferred to the morgue at Sanglah Hospital in Denpasar.

Pande had been traveling to Bali with her husband, who refused an autopsy, said Widjaja.

There were no external signs of violence on the woman’s body, the spokesman told reporters.

“The victim died of drowning, there was no sign of violence,” he concluded.
