An American man has been charged with the rape of a Filipino woman in Canggu, while the victim’s friend may also face jail time for helping the alleged rapist.

According to the police, BJC, a woman from the Philippines, went out on the night of Nov. 20 with her friends, another Filipino woman identified as M and an American man identified as JP.

“They are friends. The victim was having a night out in town with them, maybe dinner and so on,” Badung Police Chief Leo Dedy Defretes said yesterday.

The party of three retired to JP’s villa in Batu Mejan at 2am on Nov. 21.

BJC excused herself to go to the bathroom. When she got out, JP carried out the rape while M held her down by her arms.

BJC reported the incident to the police the next day. The alleged culprits were detained and charged with rape under the Sexual Violence Law, which carries a 12-year prison sentence.

“We are going into what their motives were,” Leo said.

Leo added that police have BJC’s physical and mental well-being in mind before they can go deeper in their investigation.
