The rotting carcass of a whale washed ashore on a beach in Badung regency this morning, the scene of which caught local residents by surprise.

The Coastal and Marine Resources Management Center (BPSPL) in Denpasar said the dead whale, which was nearly 14 meters long, was found by local residents on the beach right in front of Café del Mar restaurant at around 10am.

“It’s about 13.8 meters in length. It was already dead and [the carcass] is rotting,” BPSPL Denpasar Head Permana Yudiarso said.

Authorities have reportedly buried the dead whale at the location after taking samples to confirm its species and identify a possible cause of death. For the time being, they suspect that it has been dead for a while and was carried away by currents to the shores in Badung regency.

“The carcass was rotting and its tail was destroyed, which means it’s been dead for a while,” Permana said.
