Driving in Bali can be a tough subject with foreigners.
Too many foreigners come to the island and drive here (often sans helmet) without international or local drivers licenses. Then they get pissed when they get pulled over by police trying to take tickets and sometimes extort some cash—much like this American vlogger’s experience.
But Dutch traveler ‘Hugo’ of the travel blog ‘We Wander Asia’ had a very different experience.
In a video that’s already gotten more than 10K views in the less than 24 hours since it has been posted to Facebook, Hugo debriefs us about his encounter with a Bali traffic cop.
The Dutchman cheerfully tells the camera: “I have my international driving license, I came prepared if they ever ask me.”
Clearly wearing a helmet, he adds “So now I got pulled over by a cop and I had my international driving license.”
Cut to the footage of Hugo holding up his license, the cop walking towards him, and his girlfriend saying, “He knows you have it baby.”
You should watch for yourself, but let’s just say high-fives, handshakes, and hugging were involved:
Getting stopped by police in Bali can be a mixed bag. You could have your helmet on, a proper license and registration, but maybe the cop finds something else wrong with how you are driving and is looking to make a quick buck. That said, we’re glad to see things went will for Hugo, who apparently did his due diligence before getting on the road!
