Australian freediving record holder Adam Stern, 28, could not resist getting behind the wheel of the ‘Boga,’ a cargo ship sunk off the coast of Kuba, North Bali in 2012 to form an artificial reef.
The Aussie captured footage the was literally breathtaking, as he dove down to explore the wreckage some 30 meters down, sans scuba gear.
A shot of him and other freediving companions around the ship’s helm as scuba divers glide by makes for an epic image.
“You know that this shot was inevitable. You can’t take a bunch of freedives through a wreck in which there is a helm and not have us stand around it pretending to be captains,” Stern said in a vlog posted two weeks ago to YouTube.
Stern had come to Bali to teach an eight-day freediving and says he went to check out Boga just for fun.
While the boat’s sinking was somewhat controversial—like was there not a more environmentally friendly way to aggregate marine life and couldn’t the tires at least have been removed from the car—the intactness of Boga is certainly something to behold for divers, who in Bali mainly flock to the USS Liberty, which is much more fragmented due to its age.
“Freediving this wreck was such a treat. I haven’t dived many wrecks that were so complete and whole as the Boga wreck,” Stern captioned the video.
“It even had a car wreck inside the hold!”
