VIDEO captures intensity of Balinese stabbing and trance ceremony

A video posted to YouTube really captures the intensity of one of the ceremonies, apparently performed during this past Melasti in March that involves people going into trance and men stabbing themselves with long daggers without drawing blood.

Melasti is a seaside purification ceremony to welcome in Nyepi, the Balinese Hindu ‘Day of Silence’ and New Year.

Haunting footage of women crying while making dance-like movements and men repeatedly thrusting the big daggers into their bodies certainly demonstrates the depths of Balinese spirituality.

The video was uploaded by YouTube user Fabrizio Alessi on March 12, 2016, but local news site Tribun Bali’s recent publication of the footage has definitely earned it some attention as of late.
