VIDEO: Berawa residents hold Balinese cleansing ceremony at crime scene where Amokrane Sabet died

Local residents of Banjar Adat Tegal Gundul gathered this afternoon around the site where French man Amokrane Sabet died on Monday after violently resisting arrest

Dozens of people participated in the traditional Balinese Mecaru Ceremony, which is commonly done after a bad incident in a village to restore peace and order to the community.

From about noon, Balinese wearing traditional clothes put down offerings and prayed in the street, hoping to expel the trauma from the area and ensure violence does not return, Tribun Bali observed.

The ceremony “aims to restore peace in Banjar Adat Tegal Gundul,” traditional village leader (Bendesa Adat Canggu) Nyoman Sujapa siad on Thursday.

Indeed Monday’s incident was anything but peaceful when the ex-MMA fighter was shot down by police after he stabbed and killed a police officer during a botched arrest operation.

“It’s so that the negative aura disappears into the next life,” Sujapa concluded. Amin to that.
