Protestors were dancing around a fire of burning tires in Bali during a demonstration against the pending reclamation of south Bali’s Benoa Bay.
A video posted to YouTube by local newspaper Tribun Bali on Thursday evening shows the ‘Tolak Reklamasi’ (reject the reclamation) demonstrators, near giddy, chanting as tires burn in the street. Video clips are from amongst Kesiman (Denpasar), Kuta, and Kedonganan, according to Tribun.
The tire burning is probably the edgiest we’ve seen ‘tolak’ protestors get, as they usually just calmly but firmly take to the streets and block traffic or set up in front of the provincial government buildings in Renon, as they did earlier this afternoon.
In addition to protesting the mega-development project that is pushing to reclaim 700 hectares of Benoa Bay, the tire burning is also to show disappointment in the “criminalization” of protest leader Wayan Suardana (Gendo). The FORBali leader has apparently come under fire recently for a tweet criticizing political organization People’s Struggle Post (Pospera). The tweet was reported to the police by Pospera.
