Video: Baby macaques sold openly at Bali market in ‘cruel conditions’

Upsetting footage shows young monkeys for sale at a market in Bali.

In a video shared to social media by Indonesian non-profit Scorpion Wildlife Monitoring Group, the long-tailed macaques can be seen chained up and looking very restless. The macaques had no access to drinking water, Scorpion wrote in the video’s comment section.

“It is a crystal clear form of cruelty to animals,” the organization writes.

The footage was shot at Satria Wildlife Market on Saturday by Scorpion investigators. Scorpion conducts investigations into both the ‘legal’ and illegal wildlife trade in Indonesia and passes their findings over to the Bali Natural Resources Conservation Center (BKSDA), according to Scorpion’s Facebook profile.

Because the young long-tailed macaques shown in the video were brought to the market without permits from BKSDA, they are illegal, says the organization.

Scorpion has started a petition pushing for the release of the animals back into their natural habitat.
