Under the Sea: French woman combines freediving and painting in Bali

Passionate about putting the beauty of the deep blue sea to canvas, one French woman decided to get a little closer to her subjects. Literally.

An illustrator going by the name of Sophie Kukukita says the first time she tried to put paint to canvas underwater was a totally spontaneous decision.

“One day in Bali, without any preparation, I put on my bikini and my mask; I took a canvas and some oil paintings. Then, I jumped into the sea, a beautiful turquoise sea of Bali,” Kukukita wrote on her blog.

It took some trial and error, but eventually she figured out how to make the ocean her studio. She says that her first attempts were a “total disaster,” but after some experimentation in a a swimming pool with a weight belt, and even painting directly onto her swimsuit instead of the canvas, her underwater painting started to go swimmingly.

While the paintings look cool, it seems she got more out of the experience than just what she put to canvas—we have to say that doing her hobby this way makes for some great instaworthy photos as well.
