While perhaps not as well known as the Canggu shortcut, the Mango shortcut (locally known as Gang Mango) is popular amongst motorbike drivers who wish to cut through the traffic when traveling from Kerobokan to Batubelig in order to reach Berawa and Canggu.
Located in Tibubeneng, the narrow road that connects Jalan Umalas Tunon and Jalan Subak Sari is temporarily closed for repairs from Monday to Thursday this week. A forbidden sign has been put up at the road’s entrance from Umalas, while only residents who live along the shortcut may use the road from the Batubelig/Canggu entry in order to get to their homes.
Tibubeneng’s Tegal Gundur banjar (community) leader I Wayan Suryanta told DetikBali that the road repair was initiated by the owner of Bulldogs Arena, a futsal court in the area.
“The road is closed from Jan. 30 (Monday) at 6am to Feb. 2 (Thursday) at 6pm,” he said.
Bulldogs Arena is hosting a party on Feb. 26 and made a donation to repair the road.
The “off-road” shortcut runs along paddy fields. Though it is less than 1 meter wide, the road is popular amongst motorcycle taxi drivers and tourists.
Over the years, we have seen numerous clips depicting motorists plunging into the paddy fields as they could not stay within the lane. Cars have also been known to find themselves on the narrow shortcut as drivers follow the shortest route option on navigation apps without any knowledge of local roads.
