While many people’s mental image of Ubud involves lush green scenery and serene vibes, anybody who has been stuck in the area’s often grinding traffic knows what it’s like to see red out of anger and frustration.
That anger exploded in a fistfight between a foreigner and a local man that recently took place in the middle of traffic on Jalan Raya Ubud. A video of the fight was uploaded to an Instagram story by @liliadarling on Sunday, after which it was reposted by a number of other accounts and went viral.
At the start of the video, the local man, who appears to be dressed like a Jero Mangku (Balinese priest) removes his traditional headdress before raising his fist towards the foreigner, dressed in a colorful shirt and sunglasses. They exchange some heated words before the foreigner shoves the local man forcefully. Another local man in a black shirt attempts to intercede but is unable to stop the other two from getting into what looks to be a rather vicious fistfight.
It’s not clear what happened after that but the viral video quickly earned the attention of local police. Although no official report was made by anybody involved in the incident, Ubud Police Chief I Made Uder told Detik yesterday that they were investigating the incident and searching for the men involved.
One witness told police that the foreigner’s car cut in front of the other man’s vehicle when there was a gap in the traffic.
We certainly know how maddening macet can be when you’re stuck in seemingly immovable traffic, but road rage is never the answer folks.
