Ubud prisoner escapes from cell on police motorbike

A a young man has escaped from jail in Ubud, apparently making his getaway on a stolen police motorbike.

Police have been on the hunt for 21-year-old Aji Wijayanto, 21, since he fled from Ubud Police custody early on Saturday morning.

Wijayanto got out of his holding cell by breaking through the ceiling, according to reports.

Guards realized he was missing at 2 am on Saturday.

While police started combing Ubud for the escaped man, one of the officers realized his own Honda Vario that had been parked in the back of the station was missing—apparently he had left the key in the ignition.

As a result of the “great escape,” three prisoners in Ubud Police custody have been transferred to a prison in Gianyar.

Head of Gianyar Police’s Criminal Investigation Unit, Insp. Gusti Ngurah Winangun confirmed the incident to local newspaper Tribun Bali yesterday, saying that police were still on the hunt.

Wijayanto was arrested on Sept. 22 for theft and is facing charges carrying seven years in prison.

The man allegedly committed theft in dozens of hotels and villas in Ubud, posing as a guest and robbing other guests.
