Indonesia has become a rising power in the tuna supply scene, leading Bali to host one of the industry’s big events.

The 4th International Coastal Tuna Business Forum (ICTBF) was held in Nusa Dua on May 26-27 to bring together relevant people from government, business, academia, and NGOs who have a stake in the international tuna trade, according to Kompas.

“This meeting is a dialogue between the government, business, and NGOs in the world,” said the director general of procession and marketing of fishery (P2HP), Saut P Hutagalung on Monday.

Hutagalung added that the tuna industry in Indonesia has become big and strategic, and that in just the past five years, the country has become the second largest tuna producer in the world, by supplying more than 16 percent of the world’s total production, he cited from the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO) 2014 data.

“Demand for tuna in the world is increasing,” Hutagalung said, explaining that responsible tuna fishing will certainly be a major challenge for the future.

The government hopes to maintain a sustainable tuna industry while continuing its efforts to increase production, for example, like prohibiting destructive fishing equipment.
