Driving on the road from Denpasar to Gilimanuk in Bali on Saturday, a truck smashed into another truck on the side of the road, fatally ejecting the truck driver helper after trying to avoid a head on collision with a bus.
“When getting on the main road, a bus suddenly appeared moving at a high speed from the opposite direction, which took up most of the road,” the truck driver, Manaf, told Tribun Bali.
Seeing that the oncoming bus was not leaving enough room for his vehicle, Manaf says he tried to brake, but because he was going downhill at a slight angle and the road was slippery from rain earlier, he lost control of his truck and hit a truck that was parked on the roadside.
When he hit the parked truck, Panji, the trucker’s helper who had been sitting on the left side of the vehicle was ejected from the truck and died at the accident scene from a severe head injury, according to Tribun.
Manaf says he surely would have collided with the bus if he hadn’t braked. But we can only imagine the guilt he must be feeling.
Head of Mendoyo traffic police I Wayan Suartama confirmed the accident to Tribun and said the case had been handed over to Jembrana traffic police. Reports did not discuss the bus driver’s culpability.
