The trial has kicked off in Denpasar District Court for a New Zealand woman charged with drug trafficking and possession.
It was kiwi Myra Williams’ odd behavior that got her noticed in the first place, back when she was in the queue and prompted for her travel documents upon landing in Bali on August 31, 2016.
Because Immigration saw that the 26-year-old from Taupo was “babbling” and behaving “unnaturally”, Williams was pulled aside for further checking and that’s when a pouch of 0.43 grams of crystal meth allegedly fell to the ground.
Not helping Williams’ case was her urine test, which police say came back positive for methamphetamine, marijuana, and ecstasy.
The kiwi is not objecting to the indictment and admits she had the drugs with her upon arrival in Bali, says Poppy Eunike, Williams’ attorney.
“She admits that she carried it. It was given to her by a friend,” Eunike told NZ Newswire after the court appearance.
Reports in December noted that Williams was not doing so hot in the lead up to her trial, saying she was “so stressed and freaked out.”
Under Indonesian law, drug use could land the kiwi four years max in jail, while the possession charge could get her 12 years, and importation could mean a maximum of 15 years behind bars.
The New Zealander is set to go back to court on January 31, according to reports.
