An Indonesian tourist who went to Bali with his siblings for the New Year holiday tragically met his end, police said, after waves caught him as he bathed at the popular Batu Belig beach.

Andika Yohanes, 21, originally from Labuan Bajo, reportedly arrived on the Island of Gods last month. He, along with his relatives, visited Batu Belig, a well-known sunset spot with small warung (local eateries), on Sunday.

North Kuta Police Chief Putu Diah Kurniawandari said that Andika jumped into the water to refresh himself after playing football on the beach. Unfortunately, strong waves suddenly hit the shore at around 6pm, pulling Andika into the sea.

“The victim was waving his hands to ask for help as the waves dragged him. His friends thought he was just playing and they ignored him,” said Diah.

Andika’s brother called for help after he noticed that Andika had disappeared from view.

Bali’s Search and Rescue Agency found Andika’s body at Petitenget Beach – around 100 meters from Batu Belig beach – at 4pm yesterday. The body was immediately brought to Sanglah Hospital.

Speaking to reporters, Andika’s aunt said the victim wanted to look for a job and live in Bali.
